As the sun peeks over the Utah canyons, bringing a new dawn through our RV window, we often find ourselves in disbelief, whispering, "Is this really our life?" This moment encapsulates our journey since May 2023, when we took a leap into full-time RV living. It's been a year of embracing simplicity, adventure, and togetherness—a stark contrast to our once anchored life in Wisconsin. Let's rewind and explore how this extraordinary journey unfolded.
- The Decision:
Our decision to transition to RV living wasn't abrupt. It sprouted from a sense of restlessness, amplified by our son's departure for college and the realization that we were living to work, not working to live. Brian's longstanding dream of leaving his stable career in education for more meaningful, seasonal work finally found its wings. With no deep roots in Wisconsin and a global pandemic that curtailed our social connections, the idea of a home on wheels seemed not just enticing but fitting for our wandering spirits.
- The Preparation:
Our preparation began with a daunting task: downsizing. We started six months ahead, gradually parting with possessions that wouldn't fit into our new, compact home. This process continued even after moving in, as we kept finding items we could live without. It was a lesson in minimalism and focusing on essentials. Thankfully, we could store family heirlooms with a generous relative, preserving our past while embracing our future.
- Early Obstacles:
Adapting to RV life had its share of teething problems. We had underestimated the learning curve—everything from using the RV to managing space efficiently. But each challenge was a learning opportunity, strengthening our resilience and adaptability.
- Adventures and Memories:
Our inaugural summer as campground hosts at Flaming Gorge, Utah, was nothing short of magical. The job entailed navigating a pontoon across the reservoir, a task that complemented the serene beauty of our surroundings. The sparsely occupied campground offered peace and tranquility, with night skies so clear we could trace satellites and the International Space Station.
But it was the simple moments that became our cherished memories: the cool morning breezes, waking up to the sun's gentle touch, and the profound realization of how much our lives had transformed. This period also allowed us to reconnect with ourselves, focus on our health, and celebrate milestones—like our 20th wedding anniversary with a river rafting trip down the Green River.
The trip, shared with dear friends, was more than a celebration. It was a poignant reminder of life's fragility, especially as we watched our friend courageously navigate Parkinson's. It reinforced our belief in living a life rich in experiences, as each day is a precious gift not to be taken for granted.
- New Beginnings in Park City:
As the leaves turned and summer faded, our journey took us to Park City. Here, Brian began working at a ski resort, coincidentally alongside our son. The excitement of seeing him more often added a new layer of joy to our adventure. Preparing the RV for winter has been a fun, albeit new, challenge. Learning about winterizing, ensuring we stay warm, and adapting to snowy conditions have all been part of our latest chapter. Though the ski season is just beginning, we're eagerly embracing these new experiences and challenges.
